Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Initial

This ACLS class is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. Through didactic instruction, active participation in simulated cases, skills and megacode the student will enhance their skills in the recognition and intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, post cardiac arrest care (PCAC), acute dysrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes (ACS). ACLS training prepares healthcare providers to manage stressful life-threatening emergency situations for the best outcome for the patient.

It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in all AHA courses and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the AHA. After successfully completing this course, students should be able to

• Apply the BLS, Primary, and Secondary Assessments sequence for a systematic evaluation of adult patients
• Discuss how the use of a rapid response team (RRT) or medical emergency team (MET) may improve patient outcomes
• Discuss early recognition and management of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), including appropriate disposition
• Discuss early recognition and management of stroke, including appropriate disposition
• Recognize bradycardia’s and tachycardia’s that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
• Perform early management of bradycardia’s and tachycardia’s that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
• Model effective communication as a member or leader of a high performance team
• Recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
• Recognize respiratory arrest
• Perform early management of respiratory arrest
• Recognize cardiac arrest
• Perform prompt, high-quality BLS including prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early automated external defibrillator (AED) use
• Perform early management of cardiac arrest until termination of
resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post–cardiac arrest care
• Evaluate resuscitative efforts during a cardiac arrest through continuous assessment of CPR quality, monitoring the patient’s physiologic response, and delivering real-time feedback to the team

Course Completion Card or Certificate

Upon successful course completion, including demonstration of skills competency in all learning stations and passing the CPR and AED skills test, bag-mask ventilation skills test, a Megacode test and a written test, students will receive an ACLS provider card, valid for two years.

    Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – HeartCode Online

    HeartCode courses are non-refundable.

    The ACLS online class is a blended Hybrid Course released by the American Heart Association (AHA) allowing for a more fluid blended education. The ACLS Heartcode allows students to take and learn the material at their own pace and is good for initial or renewal certification. Upon completing the ACLS online class, the student is required to print out the course completion of the ACLS on-line class they took and bring it for the Skills checkoff. After successfully completing both online and in-class skills checkoff, the student will receive an AHA eCard or Certificate valid for 2 years.

    Access codes will be emailed within 24 hours when orders are placed between 7:30am–5:30pm PST Monday–Friday. If order is placed on Friday after 5pm PST, code will be emailed Monday morning.

    • HeartCode ACLS uses a personalized adaptive algorithm that sets students on the most efficient path to ACLS mastery.
    • Students follow a continuously adapting learning path that is personalized by their own inputs: their performance and their self- reported confidence level related to each probing question.
    • Course content is presented in the form of self-directed learning content, probes, and Cognitive Assessment Activities.
    • The student has a choice of completing a pre-hospital or in-hospital contextualized
      track.

     

    Course Completion Card or Certificate

    There are 3 parts to successfully complete the ACLS HeartCode – Online version.

    • PALS Part 1. Upon successful completion of the online portion, including the written exam, students receive a Part 1 certificate of completion, which must be presented for parts 2 and 3.
    • Part 2*, a hands-on skills practice session with an AHA ACLS Instructor.
    • Part 3*, a skills test with an AHA ACLS Instructor.

    Parts 2 and 3 should be completed in one “skills practice and testing” session.
    Students will receive an AHA ACLS course completion card, valid for two years, upon successful completion of all three parts.
